Under ground waterEven though the stay imposed on usage of groundwater for construction activities in Noida and Greater Noida has not been withdrawn, National Green Tribunal has allowed the realtors to present information regarding their liabilities related to usage of underground water.

Upon an application filed by developers, the tribunal allowed CREDAI to be impleaded as a party to the case. In a jolt to the real estate industry in Noida and Greater Noida, the tribunal had imposed a ban on January 11 prohibiting builders from extracting groundwater for construction activities.

The ban has been enforced upon a petition filed by an environmental activist alleging rapid depletion of the underground natural resource in the region due to its over-exploitation by builders.

Officials of CREDAI informed that the formal application for impleadment in the case, which would be filed with the tribunal, would entail measures adopted by the developers in the region towards conservation and rejuvenation of groundwater. According to CREDAI, its members who are the builders in the region have adopted measures to recharge groundwater resources.

The tribunal, in its last hearing, had placed the onus for implementation of the ban order on EPCA-NCR, apart from the Noida and Greater Noida authorities, among others. This is after realising serious environmental threat relating to underground water, wastage and pollution of underground water.
