Nomenclature changes in the national housing schemes
Narendra Modi government’s ambitious plan of ‘Housing for All by 2022′ may be named after SardarVallabhbhai Patel. This choice was made keeping in mind the secular and strong image of the late ironman of India. Rajiv AwasYojna (RAY), named after the late former PM, will also get subsumed as all the existing housing schemes by Centre will be clubbed to achieve this big goal.
There are many projects in India named after the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty. The proposed nomenclature of one of the biggest schemes of the NDA government is part of the NDA government’s efforts to give importance to the leaders of our national independence movement.
Just a few days ago, the Centre decided to drop the name of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi from Indira AwasYojna, a social welfare programme to provide housing for the rural poor. The scheme may be rechristened as National GraminAwas Mission (GRAM).
At present, there are affordable housing programmes under Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Revewal Mission (JNNURM), RAY and Affordable Housing and most of them operate under Partnership.
The new programme may be named as ‘Platinum Jubilee Urban Housing Mission – Sardar Patel Awas’ to mark the celebration of 75 years of country’s independence by 2022. This year is declared as the target year for the scheme.Housing for all was one of the major promises of BJP in its election manifesto.
