North Line metro to accommodate more commuters
The North line of the Namma Metro between Sampige Road and Peenya will be taking more passengers, which comes in as a major relief for commuters, said Managing Director, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL).
According to the statistics from the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), there were five lakh footfalls every day on public transport. The metro line will help the people using public transport during peak hours. It is expected that there will be more commuters than what they have on the Reach 1 stretch between MG Road and Baiyyappanahalli.
Green Line of Namma Metro (part of Reach 3) is expected to open operations by July this year and the traffic movement below the Metro corridor between MG Road and Baiyyappanahalli has been smooth after the Metro operations began last year.
All the approvals have been done for Namma Metro Project and the civic body is just waiting for the green signal before the assembly elections are announced in the state. However, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) has decided to drop the plans to take up Phase II on public-private partnership (PPP) model in operations, including track, signalling and rolling stock, for two new lines in the metro rail project, Namma Metro Phase 2.
In a recent Board meeting of the BMRCL, the decision of not to go for PPP was taken. The BMRCL is planning to with EPC model (Engineering, Procurement and Construction), which is being followed for Phase I.
The BMRCL had planned to construct two lines- IIM-B to Nagavara and Jayanagar to Electronic City, under Phase II, on a PPP model. The estimated cost was Rs 6,000 for the PPP model.
The government has given in-principal approval for the project based on the detailed project report prepared by DMRCL for Phase 2 of Namma Metro and has estimated a total amount of Rs 26,405 crore. Phase 2 involved two extensions – Byappanahalli to Whitefield and Mysore Road Terminal to Kengeri on the East-West corridor of Phase 1 and Hessarghatta Cross to Manjunathanagar and Jaraganahalli Cross to Anjanapura on the North-South Corridor. Two new lines were also proposed to be taken up under this phase.
