Odisha govt requests centre’s help for metro project

MRTSBhubaneswar- Odisha government has sought help from the Union Ministry of urban development over starting an intercity metro rail service between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. The government has been planning to initiate monorail connecting these two cities and also high speed bus service in Bhubaneswar.

The state government has sent a letter to the ministry requesting logistical support and funds to start the metro rail project. It has sought the Centre’s help to prepare a detailed project report (DPR). The proposal was initiated in 2008 and it was labelled as mass rapid transit system (MRTS).

The metro service is estimated to be viable for a population of minimum 20 lakh, but according to Census 2011, presently, the total population of the twin cities is approximately 15 lakh. It is expected to grow to 40 lakh by 2030. The MRTS has been initiated focusing on the 40 lakh population by 2030 so that it can start functioning by that time.

The principal adviser of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said that it is difficult to run metro rails in Bhubaneswar alone as the population is merely one milion due to which metro would end up to be expensive. Cheaper alternatives such as bus rapid transit system (BRTS) or high speed tramway system is suitable for the city, he suggested.

Besides this, four years ago, RITES, a central government enterprise dealing with transport and infrastructure, had proposed to start monorail between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. Monorail is a rail-based transport system on a single rail. Recently, a survey was conducted in this regard by the state government through engaging a public firm named Engineering Projects India (EPI). Though the firm has reported to the chief secretary, while the state government is doubtful about few congested lanes in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, which might lead to frequent roadblocks.

And at the same time, the French government’s Agence Francaise de Developpement (AFD), which is planning to fund the proposed BRTS project, asked the state government to revise the DPR that was prepared in 2009. Following this, the project has got further boost. Under this project, dedicated bus corridors would be identified in order to improve public transport system in the city.
