PCMC Pune to start door-to-door Garbage Collection in 52 Wards soon
The total population of Pimpri Chinchwad township is estimated to be around 17 lakh and the area falling within the municipal limits is 175 sq km. Around 500 to 600 tonne garbage is generated daily and dumped at the garbage depot at Moshi.
For the last two years, non-governmental organisation (NGO) SWaCH has been collecting door-to-door garbage in 54 wards in the A and D zones. The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has provided 133 hopper rickshaws for the collection, besides training women volunteers to drive the vehicles. Voluntary charges of Rs 20 per month are payable for the collection work. But there are complaints from people in various parts of the township that some persons driving the garbage collection vehicles demand compulsory monthly payment from residents.
PCMC proposes to start door-to-door garbage collection in the remaining 52 wards in B and C zones through a private contractor, who will also have to transport the collected garbage to the Moshi depot.
The 52 wards in B and C zones cover an area of 99 sq km and a population of 8 lakh that generates 300 tonne of garbage every day. The civic body has invited bids for door-to-door garbage collection, segregation and transportation of the garbage to the Moshi depot. The PCMC will provide 145 hopper rickshaws to the operator to collect the garbage and will also pay charges quoted in the tender to run the project for five years.
R B Chavan, health executive officer, PCMC, said, “The contract given for garbage collection in A and D zones is different from the one to be given for B and C zones. We will be selecting an operator who has the experience and capacity to run this project, and not an NGO. Also, there will be no provision of collecting Rs 20 as voluntary charges from citizens. The private operator will have to transport the collected garbage to the Moshi garbage depot which is not the case for A and D zones. We will also select a private operator who can use his own vehicles if needed.”
