Pongal Celebrations-The City Woke Up To Overflowing Garbage
From early on Tuesday, the Chennai Corporation’s helpline was flooded with calls from areas like Tiruvanmiyur, Chintadripet, Kotturpuram and Mylapore where residents complained that the situation had gone from bad to worse.
After four days of frenzied Pongal celebrations, the city woke up on Tuesday to overflowing garbage and other civic woes.“Civic officials are not paying any attention to clearing the street waste. Even the elected representatives cannot be reached for help. The bins are overflowing on our street,” said a resident.
Traders of Mohd Hussain Sahib Street in Chindadripet, off Ritchie Street the city’s electronic hub find fault with the conservancy labourers. The street, where hundreds of people come every day for wholesale purchase of electronic goods, does not have waste bins, they said. This Pongal has aggravated the chaos with the entire street becoming a garbage dump, they claimed.
Neither the corporation nor the private conservancy agency enagaged by it appears to be taking up solid waste management very seriously. The residents of Balakrishna Road in Mylapore, near Sanskrit College, have a different tale to tell. “Unlesss the authorities are called up for help, the street will be littered with waste for days. This Pongal was no exception,” said R Aravind, a resident.
