Power charges hit water board
Hyderabad – As the work at Godavari and Krishna drinking water projects has picked up the speed, the concerns of Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has raised.
These essential projects will meet the rising water needs of Hyderabad city. The concerns raised are related to the high power bill when these two water projects in Hyderabad will be commissioned.
The board is already paying half of its revenue funded for electricity bills. The Board is thinking that when the Godavari and Krishna Phase III projects will come in action, the power bill will increase by Rs 40 crore.
The monthly revenue to the board is around Rs 58 crore and it spends Rs 33 crore for paying electricity charges. The two Phases of Krishna drinking water project consumes Rs 25 crore because the water supply here is pump based. The power bill of Krishna Phase II is expected to rise by Rs 12 crore while that of Phase three of Godavari drinking water project may increase by Rs 30 crore.
There is a great imbalance between revenue and expenditures on these two projects thus the water board is now looking for help by government. Beside these charges, there are many expenditures bore by the board from the monthly revenue. These are salary, pension and allowances which accounts Rs 19 crore. Loan repayment along with interest of Krishna phase I accounts Rs. 6.5 crore a month. These expenditures leave no amount left to be paid on maintenance part.
The financial problem of the water board can be reduced if they receive their unpaid dues of worth Rs 650 crore. The Board has no idea when these dues will be paid.
In this amount , government and Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Ltd.(IDPL) owes Rs 155 crore and Rs 4 crore respectively. The list of defaulters is very long but the main ones are the Panchayati Raj and Rural Water Supply departments who are suppose to pay Rs 115 crore. Others are Zoo Park (Rs. 1.05 crore), Medical and Health department (Rs. 10 crore), Cantonment Board (Rs. 20 crore) and many government schools and colleges (Rs 4 crore).
In such a situation, government has two options either they give permission to collect high charge from consumers or ask Andhra Pradesh Central Power Distribution Company Ltd. (APCPDCL) to charge less tariff.
