Property tax doubled by civic agencies

The three municipal corporations of Delhi have collected crores of rupees through property tax this financial year.

East Delhi Municipal Corporation has collected Rs 140 crore and has been rated as the highest. There were  2,10,837 tax payers this year whereas, last year, the number of tax payers was 2,04,117.

A corporation official said that they have used a distinct procedure to collect the arrears from the tax defaulters  such as beating drums. He added that they have added many new hotels, factories, schools, shopping malls, etc in the tax net.

An east Delhi corporation official revealed that they have collected Rs. 70 lakh from Mandoli Jail, Rs. 50 lakh from BSNL, Rs. 12 Lakh from Power Grid, Rs. 30 lakh from Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty Hospital while Rs. 80 lakh has been received from Maharaja Agrasen College as property tax.

The North Delhi Municipal Corporation has collected Rs. 326 crore this year, whereas last year, their collection was only Rs. 182 crore.

A north Delhi corporation official has said that the tax amount is expected to cross Rs. 330 crore this year as online payments after March 23 is yet to be added.

The South Municipal Corporation has collected an amount of Rs. 604 crore this year, whereas last year the corporation has collected only Rs 582 crore.

The leader of South corporation, Subhash Arya said that the South Delhi Municipal Corporation has managed to reach the target.

The total amount collected by the three municipal corporations of Delhi in the previous fiscal was a whopping Rs. 763 crore.
