PUDA has initiated a project to acquire 1,055 acres
Even as resentment continues to prevail over the acquisition of land for the Rajpura thermal plant and a Siel Chemicals unit by the state government, the Punjab Urban Development Authority (PUDA) has initiated a project to acquire another 1,055 acres near Patiala city. The land will be used to construct Urban Estate, Phase IV, and a bypass from the Sirhind road (Patiala) to Bhadson.
The first three phases of Urban Estate are situated along the Patiala-Rajpura road. PUDA will acquire land for these projects in Seona, Jassowal, Sidhuwal, Raungla, Hassanpur and Baran villages. Around 667 acres will be acquired in Seona village alone. While Phase IV of Urban Estate will be set up in around 958 acres, 99 acres will be acquired for the bypass.
Farmers and the district administration have locked horns after the state government’s decision to hasten land acquisition in Patiala villages ahead of the new Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2013, which comes into force from January 1, 2014. Hundreds of farmers in the four villages of Patiala are up in arms against the Punjab Government’s recent decision to acquire their agricultural land to raise another urban estate in Patiala.
