PWD has been asked to build 50km elevated road in Delhi
The main problem facing by the PWD department in Delhi is the shortage of spaces for further construction and for those that are already under progress within the congested cityscape. The secretary of urban development, Delh has asked the Department to consider the proposal of developing a 50km elevated road in the city. This is apart from the one that is already under construction. This proposal aims to free the city from the troubles of decongestion.
Land acquisition and the skyrocketing property prices are key challenges. Out of network of 35,000 km in Delhi 12,000 km is with the PWD. PWD has submitted a roadmap of the ongoing projects and plans ahead in front of the UD department. There are four ongoing projects, four awaiting approval and 14 proposals for which feasibility studies are progressing.
The projects like the Nizamuddin and Lodhi Road, Lutyens’ Delhi and the IGI Airport that are already in the pipeline, even elevated stretches seem impossible. These will be probably turned to tunnel roads as per official reports.
PWD has also mentioned that with the multiplicity of agencies in Delhi to handle traffic and road issues, drafting plans is becoming a real challenge. In the meeting PWD conducted with the UD secretary, they mentioned the need to empower the state government and making the chief minister of lieutenant governor, the head of Delhi’s unified metropolitan transport authority, a new body that has been proposed for the city. UTTIPEC, which is at present catering this purpose of this body, can also be brought under the state’s control.
As part of the Delhi decongestion plans, the PWD has plans for making most roads signal-free. However, this movement can provoke the environmentalists who are supporting the rights of pedestrians; to help them easy movement without using over bridges and subways. But with the city’s increasing traffic, measures like this are a need of the hour.
Sources also reported that the Delhi traffic police and PWD are together stressing on fast-tracking the north-south and east-west connections, with emphasis on development of an eastern and western peripheral road system. This proposal will include the Kalindi Kunj bypass, the Wazirabad bypass and the Rohini drain-Mukarba Chowk connections of the city.
