Renovation work has to be need-based: Residents of MS Apartments

Building renovation workDelhi- MS Apartments, situated on Kasturba Gandhi Marg, needs major renovation work, as recognized by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD). Although CPWD has come forward to take up renovation work of the outer portion of all apartment blocks in the complex, the residents have raised concerns over the renovation plans.

Constructed in 1968, MS Apartments is a home to many government employees. Several buildings in the complex have cracks, which CPWD officials describe them as, suffering from “structural safety problems”.

The outer façade of all the six blocks from A to F need major renovation work as followed by various incidents like concrete coming off in places, cracks developing along columns and fencing of balconies falling off. The renovation work has been started in only one of the six blocks.

In this regard, the residents have written a letter to Ministry of Urban Development seeking help. However, the residents are not against the renovation work. They want the work to be taken up need-based way on a small scale. But the plan of CPWD officials would bring down all and barricade the lobby areas.

The residents are afraid that this type of renovation work would be a mess and they also doubt the early completion by CPWD. The residents are worried that the large scale renovation work would force them to live in a locked up way, without enough space to move around in the complex.

Around 300 government employees and families live in the MS Apartments. It has five blocks (A-Block to E-Block) of eight floors each comprising of 252 double-bedroom units and 94 single-bedroom flats. The sixth block (F-Block) is a hostel block with no permanent residents residing there.

The renovation work in F-block has been started four months ago while the CPWD officials are trying to sort out the issue with residents to start the work in other blocks. The officials said they will ensure minimum inconvenience to residents as the work has become very necessary as the apartments are in poor condition.

The president of the Residents Welfare Association (RWA) of MS Apartments said that the resident body has given the go-ahead for the project as of now. The work is likely to take two years to complete.
