Residents demand clarity on metro routes in western Mumbai suburbs
The proposed Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd metro line (CBM) is not yet sanctioned and not to be executed soon. However, the residents feel that it is unfair for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to give unnecessary reasons of starting the project and making it an elevated corridor.
The residents in the western suburbs of Mumbai are against the elevated corridor stating that there has been growing demand from western suburbs to make the line underground and combine it with the third metro route.
Two and half years back, Bombay high court had ordered MMRDA to go with all the norms associated with Union ministry of environment and forest (MoEF) and the coastal regulation zone (CRZ).
MMRDA has realised that the clearances are not possible to obtain and the officials are not trying their best as well. Furthermore, the corporation has been misusing the funds for this misplaced project year after year, and no one knows what has happened to Rs 138.00 crores announced in the last financial year.
Also, MMRDA has received suggestions and objections regarding the same metro route for more than 14 months back and yet nothing has been developed as further plan of action yet.
The suggestions and objections were given on whether to combine Metroline 3 with 2 and totally underground between Colaba and Dahisar.
Earlier, it was mentioned that the opening of the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar metro to the public will delay even though the construction of the line is nearing completion. It passed the seventh deadline without opening on time.
Now, the deadline has been set to August 2013. However, MMRDA officials said the line will be open to the public only in December 2013.
According to the officials of Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL), 99% of the construction work is complete. However, the work on the stations is far from being complete.
Versova and Chakala stations are almost ready but Asalfa station is half done. Also, if the Asalfa station is not ready by year end, the metro will not stop and will be functional.
