Residents of Kalakshetra Road allege water contamination
Residents of kalakshetra road thiruvanmiyur chennai said to be suffering from health problems as the Metro water supplied to them is allegedly contaminated. For residents in several parts of Tiruvanmiyur Chennai, sewage overflow has been a recurring problem. Besides having to endure stagnant pools, they also suffer when sewage mixes with drinking water stored in sumps. On Tuesday, several residents gathered in front of Sivakumara Nilaya, an apartment complex.
S Ramamurthy, a resident of the area, said: “It seems that the water supply in the entire area has been affected for the last one week as two sewerage pipelines near a house in Valmiki Nagar broke and the sewage got mixed with water.”
Responding to the complaints, a Metro-water official said there were plans to strengthen the sewerage network in the area and that measures would be taken to arrest the problem temporarily.
S Ramamurthy, a resident, said the sewer lines were about 70 years old and inadequate to meet the demand. “The situation is very bad in the mornings, when the pressure on the lines is the highest. There is back-flow into toilets and bathrooms,” he said. In appeals sent to Metro-water, the association requested laying of new sewer lines .
The residents of the area in a signed petition to the Metro-water chairman have urged the authorities to take action on a war-footing.
