Dumping yard near school has polluted groundwater and pose serious health risk
Residents of maduravoyal-Chennai raise stink over dumping yard near school. Residents say seepage from the dump has polluted groundwater, making it unfit for use. Besides the stench, heaps of domestic waste, plastic and rotting carcasses pose serious health risk to residents. Garbage from Porur and Virugambakkam is dumped in the yard everyday. Neighbours complained of severe respiratory problems because of burning of waste including plastic.
People who regularly pass by Pon Vidyashram School on Arcot Road in Maduravoyal involuntarily cover their nose. The stench from a one-acre dumpyard which was a lake only a few years ago has made life miserable for about 650 families and hundreds of children who study in two schools in the neighbourhood. When the garbage pile becomes unmanageable local body workers set fire to it, raising noxious fumes.
Rain worsens the situation as it attracts a lot of stray dogs to the locality. After a rain, the stench becomes unbearable and the dumpyard turns into a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Residents have appealed to the chief minister, deputy chief minister, district collector, mayor and officials of the Pollution Control Board, to relocate the dump yard, but no action has been taken.
