Rs 577-crore Mumbai Road Contract in hands of a Single Company

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has handed over the Rs 577 crore road contract to nine contractors of the same company which has been taking over the bid from past 22 years. The other contractors were disqualified for submitting fake documents. The remaining eight contractors are in low feel for quoting bids below rates. The Vitraag Construction Company has also been awarded roads contracts in the past. However the opposition from Congress and MNS parties has resulted in the BMC standing committee facing tough situations.
The civic body has appointed a Geneva-based firm to carry out audits over the Mumbai city roads. However BMC has six external auditors monitoring the quality of the constructed roads, and also the international firm has been appointed with the cost of providing Rs 4.17 crore as a consultancy fee. Six auditors are expected to charge Rs 2.44 crore for one year. The roads in Mumbai atleast are now expected to improve with the quality of work from the nine contractors who have won the bid.
