Rural housing scheme to be re-launched soon
The government is planning to re-launch the 30-yearold rural housing scheme. This is expected to expand the reach of the scheme. It is expected to be re-launched as a national mission with a target to build 3.2 crore pucca (brick and mortar) houses for the poor over the next eight years.
The move is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of housing with water, electricity and toilets for all the Indians by 2022. The rural development ministry is planning to give a new identity to its flagship programme. They have floated a discussion paper to achieve this target and this flagship programme named as National Gramin Awaas Mission or Gram will be under the ambit of Indira Awaas Yojana.
According to the paper, Gram will have an annual target of 25 lakh houses and the fund requirement of Rs 27,300 crore per year. The ministry is considering about revamping the scheme, which is in place since 1985.
The key proposals placed for stakeholder consultation include doubling the per unit assistance to Rs 150,000 in plains and a little more in hilly or difficult areas.
Most of the rural houses do not have a toilet and the people have to go to the fields to defecate. This is very unhygienic and unsafe. Toilet will be an integral part of the house and hence the area of each unit will be enhanced from 20 square metres to 30 square meters.
