Samsung bags Hyd metro fare collection contract from L&T
Hyderabad- The last contract of L&T Metro Rail of Hyderabad has been handed over to Samsung Data Systems India Private Limited. It is a Rs 200-crore contract for the Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system for the metro.
Samsung Data Systems India Private Limited is a subsidiary of Samsung SDS, Korea. This Korean company was selected among other bidders on the basis of several technical parameters and their past experience. It is believed that this technology will bring an international experience to the passengers.
According to the chief executive and managing director of L&T Metro Rail, the value of this contract is not finalized but it will range between Rs 180 crore and Rs 220 crore. The amount will be finalized according to the final design of the stations. It is expected that the design will have a minimum of 4 entry-cum-exit gates to 8 and above.
He added that this automated fare collection system includes a smart card-based ticketing platform which will allow the use of debit cards, credit cards, mobile banking and cash for the payment of same. According to him, this ticket vending machine would also be set up at various other places except station.
This platform card could be used for other modes of public transport. It can also be used for parking and shopping under the clearinghouse concept which is being promoted by the Ministry of Urban Development. Thus Hyderabad city would be first in India to have this futuristic and common system for all modes of transport with a single smart card.
This 16,000 crore project will be fully operational in the year 2017. It will be completed in phases and the first phase is expected to be functional in 2014 or 2015. The project is funded maximum by L & T metro on its own. A small amount (around Rs 1,458 crore ) of project cost will also be given by the center.
So far, L& T has spent Rs 11,000 crore for various contracts which include rolling stock, signalling and communications, and civil works.
