Sewage leaks in Hyderabad; residents’ health at risk
Hyderabad- The residents of Hyderabad are at serious risk of ailments as the sewage system of the city is on the verge of collapsing. The sewage dirt is seen floating at various parts of the city.
Several complaints have been registered from different parts of the city in last one year. The situation is so worse that pedestrians and motorists in areas like Trimulgherry, Karkhana and Begumpet are compelled to walk or drive through puddles of accumulated sewage.
People often get splashed with blackish-green filth and exposure to such dirt could lead to ailments such as typhoid and hepatitis. There is a possibility of ingesting this filth by mistake leading to amoebiasis, cholera and other worm infections.
Expert says that even small exposure to sewage can result in dermatitis, rashes and ulcers, which could further lead to secondary infections. Doctors in the city have already warned the residents about these ailments. They suggest people to wash hands and feet after every exposure to filth. They also advise to wear shoes and clean them regularly.
As the sewage water is being accumulated on roads, it is also affecting business in these areas. For instance, the dirty water in front of a restaurant is unpleasing and emits foul smell. This in turn increases flies with the stench driving customers away.
Many restaurants are witnessing loss in their business especially during monsoon. Summer is making the situation even worse. It is found that these areas report sewage leakage early twice every month. Repeated complaints have been filed which has resulted in only temporary solutions like dumping mud over the stagnant slurry.
According to the officials of Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB), Begumpet is facing sewage problem due to shallow pipelines and heavy traffic load. In this regard, proposals have been made to replace these pipeline which will be done along with the metro rail works.
