Water scarcity hits Hyderabad

Comments Off Sub Category:Civic Issues,Hyderabad,Municipality Posted On: Mar 19, 2013

Hyderabad- It’s time for the residents of Hyderabad to brace up for the water crisis this summer. There has been a gradual reduction of water supply in twin cities, Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Some areas are already facing the heat of insufficient drinking water supply.

On one hand, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has started drilling borewells at various places in the city while on the other hand, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has launched ‘Save Water’ campaign.

Around 30 percent of the drilling has been unsuccessful due to heavy depletion of groundwater along with non-availability of water table. Few areas where the situation is worst are Marredpally, Malkajgiri, Ameerpet and Sanjeev Reddy Nagar etc.

To tide over the water crisis in April and May 2013, government has earmarked Rs 262 crore for a summer action plan. The water board has also decided to install water meters at all transmission and distribution systems to keep a check of lost or Unaccounted for Water (UFW) in Greater Hyderabad limits.

Emergency pumping has already begun from the artificial lake Himayat Sagar and by the end of the month, Osman Sagar will also join it. On a normal day, the city is supplied with water of 340 million gallons per day (mgd).

There is a short supply of 15 mgd with the emergency pumping from Himayat Sagar. The shortage of water supply will rise to 25 mgd with pumping of Osman Sagar. It is expected that both the reservoirs would dry up by the end of April 2013 and the shortage of water supply will further rise to 40 mgd per day.

The water level in five reservoirs (Singur, Manjeera, Krishna, Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar) is depleting which would result in supply of water only on alternate days for the next few months in major areas of twin cities. It is also possible that water may be available once in three days.

Although there is no power cut at the pumping stations of HMWSSB, sudden tripping of feeders is highly affecting the supply in various areas. It is majorly affecting some of the areas like Kukatpally, Hydernagar, Alwal, Qutbullapur, parts of Banjara Hills, Borabanda and Lingampally.
