Chennai’s first metro train to be launched in 2013
Chennai- The first set (four coaches) of the first metro train will be launched soon in 2013. According to the officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the work has started in October 2012.
The manufacturing is carried out by a factory named Alstom Transport, a French company at Sri City near Tada in Andhra Pradesh. The formal inauguration of this company is likely to be held in March 2013.
A total amount of Rs 1,471 crore is handed over to the company to produce 168 metro coaches. The manufacture and testing of nine train sets i. e 36 coaches of Chennai metro train will be done by Alstom at their Lapa factory in Brazil. The remaining coaches will be produced at the factory site in India.
The main goal behind launching this factory in India is to promote indigenous manufacturing and reduction of cost. Moreover it makes the service and maintenance part easy. A model coach prepared at Brazil has reached Chennai which will soon be displayed for public after it is taken to Sri City.
