parkingNew Delhi- With the clearance of the budget proposal by the civic body, parking rates for areas  which fall under the South Delhi Municipal Corporation were doubled.

This measure by the civic body was taken in as it had been suggested by the SDMC Commissioner Manish Gupta followed by few modifications.

As per Gupta’s decision, an amount of Rs. 20 will be  levied for the initial three hours and Rs. 10 will be charged  for every hour for four-wheelers and Rs. 10 for first three hours and Rs. 5 for every subsequent hour for two-wheelers.

It had been quite a long time since the parking rates were revised and this step was taken in order to regularize the parking contractors who are until date are charging a fee of Rs. 20 from drivers. The additional Rs. 10 will be kept for themselves rather than giving it to the Corporation.

In December, Gupta had requested for a fee charge on hourly basis with a car parking space in Category A to fetch Rs. 10 for half an hour and for half hour to one hour Rs 20 and for one hour to three hours Rs 50.  Also an  additional Rs 20 per hour will be charged for an additional hour each time.

As per Rajesh Gehlot, Chairman of SDMC Standing Committee, the hike in parking fee will also compel the commuters to use public transport. Gehlot also said that the civic body is striving towards making the entire system computerized through hand-held devices that will show the exact charge.

He also said that the farmhouses will be regularized by the SDMC with a fee amount which might cost each farmhouse in crores. The SDMC is however expecting a revenue generation of about Rs. 600-700 crore to be used for fund developmental projects.

An amount of Rs. 75 crore  has been earmarked by the civic body by the next financial year for the development of rural and urban villages. Also for the development of unauthorized colonies which were regularized recently by the Delhi Government, the Corporation has allotted Rs.50 crore for the development of these colonies.

Similarly, the councilors are also demanding an increase in their funds from Rs. 50 lakh to Rs. 1.5 crore to brighten their chances of elections.
