Subway nearing completion makes residents happy
As the Monegar Choultry Road subway nears completion, the North Chennai residents are happy as from three-four years they were facing problems commuting in one ways.
The subway work started in March 2008 was stopped and resumed many times. The subway would have completed faster if it was in South Chennai, said the residents and shopkeepers of the famous cloth market on Monegar Choultry Road.
The shopkeepers revealed that they had lost many customers since the shoppers had to take a long route to reach their shops.
From past four years, the residents of Old Washermenpet, were facing difficulty in reaching to schools and other places as they had to cross two bridges.
Patients visiting the Government Stanley Hospital are also suffering because the vehicular subway construction. Even though they say that they have patients with them, policemen do not allow to take short cut. And many people cannot afford taxis or auto rickshaws, hence they were forced to walk.
The subway work work which was proposed in 2006 with a cost estimate of Rs 9.25 crore but by 2011 it had risen to Rs 15.75 crore. The deadline for the completion was pushed several times.
As of now, works including storm-water drains construction and laying of service lanes are nearing completion while works such as electrification, painting and laying of bituminous topping are to be done shortly.
