“Tanker Free Mumbai” To Keep The Tankers off The City Streets
Tanker Free Mumbai awareness about the availability and distribution of drinking water and to keep the tankers off the city streets. The actress Sonam Kapoor is set to join the campaign.
The campaign “Tanker Free Mumbai”, intends to spread awareness about the amount of water which is adequately available for the city’s needs as per the water availability reports released by the civic body. In a statement released by the NGO, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) claims that there is enough water to serve the city till the monsoon arrives (June 2011). The lake levels too are considerably high this year and there is 3.41 lakh million litres of water in reserves as of May 4 2011. In spite of this, the civic body currently supplies 3,400 million litres of water per day to the city, against a demand of 4,200 million litres daily.
In spite of this, the civic body currently supplies 3,400 million litres of water per day to the city, against a demand of 4,200 million litres daily. By calling for water tankers, the city is inadvertently encouraging the water mafia. On an average, a 10,000 litre tanker of BMC water costs Rs 2,500. Estimates suggest that private operators supply about 400 million litres a day that’s an annual business of Rs 3,600 crore.
The actress Sonam Kapoor is set to join the campaign. It is not clear if the actress, who lives in a sprawling Juhu bungalow with her parents has ever had to bear the brunt of water crisis, a source close to her emphasised, “Sonam is a Mumbaikar and feels very concerned about what’s happening around her as a responsible citizen. Being in Mumbai, Sonam is aware of the water crisis in various parts of Mumbai and that’s why she is supporting the cause.” When contacted, Sonam said, “I fully support the drive. I believe people should no longer compromise and give the water mafia leeway to do what they want. Say ‘NO’ to water tankers.” The NGO will meet the actress on Tuesday to work out the details of the campaign.
