Taxes worth Rs. 1,000 crore to be given to GHMC by govt
Hyderabad-The meeting scheduled for December 1 is expected to create a furor with the opposition as the Government of Hyderabad has been dawdling on the payment of property tax of its buildings. The current pending amount of the property tax on the government buildings stands up to Rs. 1,000 crore.
Around 1,186 buildings are occupied by the State Government under GHMC limits levying about Rs. 71 crore of property tax annually. However, the government has been paying the property tax of only Rs. 20 crore per annum since 2005-06. This leaves them with arrears of about Rs. 800 crore. Due to the delay, the pending amount by the government will be followed by a penalty of 2% which comes up to Rs. 1,000 crore for the past seven years.
Ultimately, the GHMC was blamed by the BJP floor leader, Bangaru Prakash in the corporation for its inability to demand the due. Prakash also stated that the GHMC is jarring towards its citizens and businesses but hasn’t raised a voice against the government. Comparatively to other bodies like the HMWSSB and the CPDCL, wherein they threaten to discontinue their services to get their dues unlike the GHMC, which has been quite lienient.
The arrears should be demanded by the GHMC before the government increase the property tax on its citizens.
