Thane citizens challenge tax reassessment
The proposal to assess property tax based on capital value of the structures in Thane has been contested in the Bombay high court by citizens organization here.
Municipal commissioner RA Rajeev has proposed that all residential, commercial or industrial property would be assessed on the basis of its capital value or market value as listed in the read reckoner.
The Thane district housing federation, an umbrella organisation of over 500 cooperative housing societies, moved the HC on this issue.
The issue had turned into a major row between Thaneites and the civic administration which had proposed the new system of tax reassessment. Citizens were upset that the administration was forcefully imposing the new tax structure which they said was discriminatory and unfair to the old residents of Thane.
Presently, property tax in Thane is determined on the basis of ratable value or rental value of the property. Challenging the civic chiefs proposal in the court, the Federation pointed out to an amendment to the BPMC Act in April 2010 by the state legislature.
