TMC plans land grab in Nandigram: Residents unhappy

Trinamool Congress land grabbingKolkata- Trinamool Congress (TMC) led Zilla Parishad has issued a notice for land acquisition in Nandigram which has made the residents unhappy.

The residents, whose land is supposed to be acquired by TMC, have clearly said that unless proper compensation is not given, they will not give the land for road development. Some residents alleged that they were being threatened by TMC leaders in this regard.

Ironically, the Trinamool Congress, which in 2007, had started anti-land acquisition movement in Nandigram, has issued a land acquisition notice in the same area.

The Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti have planned to construct a bypass to avoid traffic jams in Nandigram, and had allocated about three acres of land for this, said sources. Notices have been sent to 140 families and they have refused to agree to it without adequate compensation.

In this regard, a meeting was also held on January 24 at the office of district magistrate, revealed sources. At the meeting, the residents were forced to give their lands to the TMC.

Residents claimed that the government and administration had fixed the rate of the land without discussing it with them. The rate that is fixed per unit of land is Rs 17,000 while the prevailing rate is at least Rs 4 lakh. This has made the locals extremely unhappy.

The locals who got the notice that their land would be acquired claimed that they are not against development but they will not give land at such unfair rates. Recalling the chief minister’s words that ‘she and her government would not acquire land forcefully’, the locals questioned the government’s move forcing landowners to give land without even discussing with them.

However the leaders denied the allegations saying that they have not threatened any resident and some people are simply making false accusations. CPI(M) leader criticized saying that the TMC should have discussed the details with the locals before issuing such notices.
