First & foremost, the traffic police must be fully trained and knowledgeable of his/her job, rules and procedures and local norms. Equally, important is politeness, courtesy, professionalism and absolute neutrality. Please learn from NY Police Department on traffic beats; they are quick, alert, very professional and always polite and neutral when more than one party is involved in any accidents. They are just great in making the accident into incidents requiring attention and make everyone involved calm, collected and focused in doing what needs to be done.
In contrast, our traffic police in Chennai are just the opposite whatever I said above, and go only after free food at Hot Chips in Nilangarai or elsewhere – look at the bellies! They are unable to walk and move their ass! What they can catch except catching cold in rainy season?
Thanks for the information. I think it is scary to drive or to walk in a city with that kind of traffic. Something has to be done.
Suggestions for traffic congestion and traffic violations.
Dear Sirs,
I have been living abroad and I come to India for vacations snd I see that there has a lot of bust in traffic with two wheelers, cars, lorries, autos and buses. The general population does not follow any kind of traffic rules and everyone wants to be on the go no matter whether anyone is crossing the road.
There is so much of traffic chaos in our country that the foreigners look at our country as one kind of uncivilized culture. I am sorry to use these words, but unfortunately I feel the same when I drive in India. In the first case, proper traffic rules should be followed by the public and prior to the public being issued drivers license they should make sure they take the test properly and pass the test. I remember that in those days 20 years back, I was issued a drivers license only if I paid the money to the RTO officer. If that is the way it is still, the general public are not going to follow the road rules, nor obey anything.
Strict fines should be implemented and drivers licenses should be taken away. Traffic violators should be penalized or even thrown in jail if that is the case if they violate. This is how things can change in our country. Following the lane discipline is just a chaos whereas you are hit by both sides with vehicles that cram up in between.
On Highways, the lorries and other vehicles do not follow the lanes. I saw people driving most of the time in the middle of the median as if they are supposed to be driving that way. Lorries are not following the highway discipline where they do not keep to the left of the road. Signs should be in place all over the highway that lorries and buses or any vehicle for that matter should be leaving the right lane free for passing traffic and not block the traffic. I had to drive in a maze on highways taking left lane and then right lane and then left lane and right lane to pass the traffic.
Slow moving vehicles should be keeping to the left and there should be signs stating that on highways. Next, I noticed that there are no restrooms on highways (toilets). There are no exits on Highways leading to small towns or cities. There is small gap from the highways were people take the exits. No proper signs before the exits are available to understand where would I want to take the exits. Signs for exits should be on the highway and not somewhere in a corner.
Thanks to those who wanted our country to be great and wanted to at least lay the roads which was not there for almost 30 years I have lived in my own country. Things are getting better and I appreciate all the hardwork that those visionaries are trying to do but unfortunately, let us do things in the right direction and in a right way.
1. Parking areas in shopping places should be mandatory for adequate vehicles.
2. Parking ramps should be constructed across the Metropolitan cities in that way people do not park on the roadside and block the traffic.
3. Strick fines and traffic violators should be punished
4. Restrooms should be built across the highways, malls and should be kept clean. Toilets are so dirty that one would not even want to step into it.
Traffice lights and stop signs should be stricly followed. I was on a stop light and people were keeping on moving and honking when I was standing there for the traffic signal to turn green.
Highways chaos is more where buses and lorries come in the opposite lanes and block the ongoig traffic almost miles and miles. Sorry, to say this, but we cannot call ourselves as a developed nation unless these things are fixed or these are addressed. Me writing this is not going to change anything or change the behavior of people, but thought I would say how chaotic and nerve wrecking it is when we drive in India.
