Tree census delayed
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was planning to use hi tech tree census, but it has been delayed as there was no response from any of the service providers.
None of the companies came to do the tree census job after tenders were floated in November. The civic body has e-floated the tenders which has led to the delay in the work.
The tree census was supposed to start in June. The BMC pushed the deadline to October, later mid-November and December. Now the tree census work will start next year in January once the recently floated tender process is completed by the mid of December.
BMC’s superintendent of gardens, Kamlashankar Yadav, confirmed that not a single company showed interest to do the job. Hence, tenders have been floated afresh. Seeing the delay, the city’s green activists said that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation could have planned a better census.
Once it started, the work will take only 12 months to get completed. But the work starting in January can affect the tree census to some extent by monsoon, as cloud cover will influence the use of GPS and GIS technology. The tree census is conducted every four years, it gives the data of number of species and trees.
