Two sea water reverse osmosis plants for Chennai city were proposed by Jayalalithaa
The Tamil Nadu Government has sought Centre’s support in implementing a host of urban infrastructure projects. These projects will be totalling several thousand crore rupees. Among the projects are two sea water desalination projects, establishment of 12 smart cities, clearance of the extension of the metro rail in North Chennai and a range of urban infrastructure projects.
A whopping Rs 26,000 crore will be used in these projects and the decision to give a green signal to these projects is pending with the government of India. When the Union Minister of Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation M Venkaiah Naidu called the Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa at the Secretariat today, she made the representation there to explain about these ambitious projects.
The Ministry of Urban Development is expected to do the 80 % funding for the two sea water reverse osmosis plants for Chennai city. The State Government sought this help from the Ministry of Urban Development and is awaiting their response.
Out of these two plants, one will be with 150 Million Litres a Day (MLD) capacity and another will be of 400 MLD. The first plant with cost Rs 1,372 crore and the second one will cost Rs 4,071 crore. These projects will help in easing the water shortage problems of the Chennai City.
