Uninterrupted power to the city is Possible

1 Comment Sub Category:Community,Municipality Posted On: Apr 13, 2011

Bescom MD P Manivannan said Bescom will supply 24X7 power if the smart grid, gas-based Bidadi power plant and distribution automated system (which ensures uninterrupted power supply by minimizing outages) is in place by two years, then they will be able to provide uninterrupted power to the city.

Manivannan said once the Dabhol-Bidadi project is functional, power generated from Bidadi plant will be available. He was speaking on the sidelines of a session organized by Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

Manivannan said Bescom will supply 24X7 power to firms if they are ready to pay Rs7 per unit for power to be drawn from the project. “Here, the power generation cost will be Rs7 per unit. However, we need permanent consumers to make steady supply available. We have initiated talks with industries and if they agree to pay Rs 7 per unit, we will move a proposal to the government to purchase power from Bidadi plant,” he said.

The pilot smart grid project to be introduced in Electronics City will be completed in two years. Besides, Bescom has roped in Infosys to provide automated system to inform people about power outages. It has also roped in services of Infosys and Reliance for automated billing system.

Manivannan said he’s keen on introducing franchise system in Bescom, whereby a portion of work will be given to private firms. “However, there should be proper checks and balances in this system,” he said.
