lucknow metroLucknow- The announcement of state budget highlighted the much promoted metro rail project in Lucknow. Although the budget did not specify the allocated amount but the Chief Minister assured speedy process of its implementation.

The original estimated cost of this metro project was around Rs 16,000 crore. According to the sources the cost of Lucknow metro rail project would be more than Rs 20,000 crore. It is expected that arrangement of finances for this project will pose a major challenge for the government. The sources also informed that most of the routes of metro are planned overhead to lower down the cost.

The Government would study the report on metro rail and will then look for the possibility of operating it on public-private partnership (PPP) model. Insufficient funds will be provided by making arrangements in the budget. Project has been revised and is proposed to cover major engineering, medical and management institutions, group housing complexes, commercial spots and important offices.

The budget also highlighted the proposal to construct a rail overbridge (ROB) from Loreto Convent crossing to Telibagh road. This ROB will cross and block the front view of the state headquarters of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Mayawati’s residence. A amount of Rs 40 crore has been sanctioned for this project in Lucknow.

This flyover is planned to solve the problem of traffic congestion on the road. Although the BSP opposed this decision but no change is confirmed by the chief minister.

The state budget also proposed a ROB near Alamnagar railway station at a cost of Rs 37 crore. Earlier the government proposed four ROB’s at Purania crossing in Aliganj, Daliganj, IT and Arjunganj. Out of these four, only two ROB’s are being properly executed.

Chief Minister assured that a detailed study on the feasibility and financial model of metro project has been conducted by the government. He added that the cost of metro project may escalate due to extension of routes from 38 km to 60 km.

Chief Minister presented a Rs 23,913 crore deficit budget for the state for 2013-14. It was 10 percent more than the last year’s budget. A amount of Rs 250 crore will be spent for the infrastructural growth of various cities in state.
