Women of Sarjapur celebrated Teej festival
On August 12, the women of Sarjapur celebrated ‘Teej’, the festivals of Hindus in a very traditional way. Teej is the festival of swings dedicated to the Goddess Parvati, commemorating her union with Lord Shiva. Goddess Parvati is worshipped by seekers of conjugal bliss and happiness. On Teej, married women pray to Goddess Parvati for well-being of their husbands, children and family members.
Traditionally daughters-in-law would go to their mothers house for teej and come back after Rakhi, in this way they would spend about 10 days of the summer with their parents. After they come back they spend Buddhi Teej which is teej for the daughters-in-law in their marital home. Buddhi Teej normally falls within a week after Rakhi. Teej is the festival of swings.Swings are hung from trees and women dressed in green clothes sing songs in celebration of the advent of the monsoon.
The event was initiated by the Inner Wheel Club of IT corridor and celebrated by the women of Sarjapur at the club house, Adarsh Palm Retreat, near Bellandur. They decorated the place with flowers, colours and ‘bandhani’ duppatas so as to get the feeling of the festival.Along with the decoration, there were ‘mehandi’ counters, tarot card reading, ‘rakhis’, dress materials and lovely collection of Laddu Gopal, jewellery and clothes.
The festive mood continued with traditional music and “Dholak” which made everybody tap to the beats. The function included cultural events like group dance by the Inner Wheel Club IT Corridor members. Apart from music, there were exotic food counters which included Chats, Jalebis, Chola Bhatura, Pani Puri, Aloo Tikki, Dhokla, Ghewar, etc. The function was greatly enjoyed by all the ladies.
District Chairman Renu Iyer, association council member Tara Gopinath, District ISO Suma Ravi and Bhavani Srinivas along with many more members graced the occasion. “We will keep doing interesting celebrations in the future as well, and not just that: “the Inner Wheel Club IT Corridor” is also committed to contributing to society and all of you will hear about the social projects also, shortly,” said Sangita Gupta, Club President.
Teej is celebrated in many parts of Uttar Pradesh Haryana, Punjab, Delhi , Rajasthan and Bihar. Idols of goddess Parvati are decorated and taken in a procession in the streets accompanied by singing, music, and dancing. It is the traditional women’s day of the community. It is customary for mothers-in-law to give daughter-in-law a piece of jewellery or other gifts on her first Teej after marriage.
