The food government department has decided to release and make available 19.97 lakh tonnes of sugar to the consumers for the month of October this year in New Delhi. The quantity released is said to be sufficient to meet the internal demand of sugar for the month of October, 2011. The sugar released for now in the retail market includes 2.47 lakh tonnes of levy sugar and 17.50 tonnes of non-levy sugar that is on free sale. All these offers are provided for the public on behalf of India celebrating festivals like Dussehra and Diwali.

Recently Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar reported over this issue saying that the government was considering an increase in percentage of taxed sugar that is made avialable for the public distribution system. However the government has come forward to bring in some discounts for the consumers when there is rise in rates of sugar for about Rs 30 per kg in the retail market.
