24×7 Water Supply Scheme aimed by PCMC Pune
The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in October 2010 with the French company Suez Environment to supply 24×7 water in one of the four zones under the municipal corporation at a cost of Rs 6.3 crore.
The proposal was sent to the state government for approval and later to the Union government’s Urban Development Department (UDD). It took three or four months and in the meantime French government had decided to reduce its share in the project from 65% to 49% and now its contribution would be Rs 2.95 crore instead of Rs 4.10 crore.
The pilot project is to be implemented in a zone with 3,000 to 5,000 water connections. The area for the pilot zone has to still be identified and the pilot project will take nine months to be completed, said Pravin Ladkat, executive engineer, water supply department, PCMC.
The lessons learnt from the pilot project will be utilised later to implement a similar scheme in the whole of Pimpri-Chinchwad. The French company will provide experts who will train three civic engineers. It will appoint experts for the water audit of the PCMC. It will also prepare a hydraulic water model of the PCMC water supply network which will enable the PCMC to identify water loss due to leakage.
The company will also periodically hold review meetings with the officials. The civic standing committee will discuss the proposal and signing of the MOU at its weekly meeting scheduled for July 26.
