25 illegal buildings sealed in Chennai
Some twenty-five buildings were sealed by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) in Chennai recently. The sealing came after the Madras high court ordered for demolition as they are illegal structures. These twenty-five buildings are located in T-Nagar and were among the 64 illegal structures which were identified in 2007 for pull-down. It should be noted that fifty per-cent of the buildings in the area are illegal.
The authorities have earlier sent notices to the commercial establishments. However with no steps being taken by them the authorities sealed the buildings n under sections 56 and 56(2A) of the Tamil Nadu Town and Country Planning Act, 1971. The CMDA’s enforcement wing and the Chennai Corporation, accompanied by 375 police personnel, began the drive and started sealing the properties. Some of the buildings that were seized belonged to famous business houses like Chennai Silks, Khadims, Textile India and Saravana Stores.
