550 errors spotted in BMC maps
Citizen groups and other bodies scrutinizing the BMC maps have so far found 550 errors in classifying the city’s open spaces.
Many open space plots have been wrongly recorded as being used for some other purpose or marked as ‘vacant land’. There are also instances where partially constructed plots have been shown as open spaces. The city’s green lung might shrink further if the mistakes are not corrected on time.
There types of mistakes are dangerous as these will have a misleading picture f the city’s open space count. Moreover tagging such plot as vacant land would mean they could be opened up for commercial exploitation.
An official of Urban Design Research Institute has pointed out misuse of open spaces. Among the most glaring errors are heritage structures such as the Gateway of India and the Royal Bombay Yacht Club being marked as open spaces and Prithvi theater being classified for residential use.
The existing land use (ELU) survey will form the basis for the new development plan, which is a blueprint for the city’s development for the next 20 years. Mistakes in the ELU will reflect in the 2014 development plan. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has extended the deadline till 24 January and it is the last date for submitting the scrutiny reports, in which it originally had 1,200 inconsistencies. The Urban Design Research Institute has prepared a fresh list, in which it has spotted 40 errors.
