7.6 million Infants are Sheltered in Indian Slums even today
Today Indian slums are sheltering every eight born urban infant, is a harsh truth that we Indians have to bear. India remarks on the proved data that the children belonging to the age group of 0 to 6 years are surviving in slums, this has been traced as the correct fact according to ‘Slums in India – A statistical compendium 2011‘ supported by the Union government. National Buildings Organization (NBO) of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation reported saying that nearly 7.6 million children are surviving in Indian slums that is nearly 13.1 per cent of the total child population of the urban areas in 26 States including Union Territories.
In Chandigarh nearly 20 percent out of total children population are surviving in slums. Statistically it has been proved that, Maharashtra has the highest record for slum child population nearing the mark of 1.7 million children with the age group between 0 to 6 years. D.S. Negi, NBO director reported saying that many states in India had approached the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation for recent estimation of slum population in concern with respective areas. Henceforth a high-power committee had long back appointed the Ministry headed by Pranob Sen and then Chief Statistician of India. The outcome of census was that nearly 3,000 and odd, remaining cities and towns were never considered to the actual data. The recent 2011 Census was taken initiative by the recommendations given by government committee, he added.
