Residents request revised plan for Tambaram East bypass project

Comments(2) Sub Category:Chennai,Community Posted On: Nov 29, 2012

Chennai- A group of residents of Sadhanandapuram-Aalapakkam near Tambaram has requested the District Administration to make some changes in the plan for the proposed Tambaram East bypass road project.

They submitted a memorandum stating that the project would affect more than 200 houses in Sadhanandapuram-Alapakkam coming under Nedungundram village panchayat in Chengalpattu taluk. The majority of the house owners are retired government servants who had invested their money, including retirement benefits, in the construction of these houses.

The houses were planned to be built on land, belonging to the ‘grama natham’ category of lands, which was acquired or bought by their forefathers 60 years before.

In 1984, when the project was initiated in order to create a bypass road to link Selaiyur junction on Tambaram-Velachery Road with the Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road, the areas around Perungalathur including Kamaraj Nagar, Sadhanandapuram, Alapakkam, Puthur and Mappedu hamlets, were not much developed.

After checking that the proposed road would pass through close to the Air Force base at Selaiyur, modifications were made. Later in 2007, the plan again got modified owing to the objection raised by Kamaraj Nagar residents who made a plea to utilise vacant government poramboke lands instead of residential localities.

In a public hearing organised by the Highways officials at Poonamallee, the Sadhanandapuram-Alapakkam residents made an appeal that two options could be considered for the project: either to acquire more than 100 acres of poramboke lands near the Sadhanandapuram-Aalapakkam or the 3.2 kilometre of Mappedu-Vengambakkam Road could be upgraded to link the Selaiyur-Camp Road with the Vandalur-Kelambakkam Road.
