Civic body nods for tram service in Thane
It was in Thane Municipal Corporation’s (TMC) court to decide whether to go in for a monorail, a Light Rail Transit (LRT) or a metro service. It was found that Light Rail Transit was financially feasible.
But the TMC gave approval for tram service with out discussing or taking views from other parties for which the opposition members were upset. This move has also increased real estate price on the Thane-Ghodbunder route.
Looking at the growing population and traffic congestion , in 2000, the government had decided to go for effective mass public transport system for the cities like Nagpur, Thane and Pune.
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), as nodal agency, appointed Consulting Engineering Services (CES) to prepare a report for 16.3 kms for tram car service or LRT.
In a general meeting, TMC approved the proposal and a detailed project report of Rs 850 crore was prepared in January 2001 and the public hearing was conducted in February 2001 by the civic body. The cost of Rs 80 crore per km for LRT worked out.
The MSRDC also got the report for monorail on the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan route through Rail India Technical and Engineering Services (RITES). The proposed route was 23.75 kms with 17 stations and as per the RITES report it was estimated to cost Rs 3271 crore which was unaffordable.
The MSRDC also prepared a detailed report on metro services between Thane and Ghodbunder Road via Teen Haath Naka, Kaapurbawdi and Kasarwadawali, which was submitted in September this year. The total length of the route is 10.87 kms and the estimated cost was Rs 2091 crore which too was not financially possible for TMC.
The MSRDC with MMRDA was constructing a service road on both the sides of the road which is 9 meter wide and 3.9 km in length. The civic body has also constructed flyovers on Patliwada, Kaapurbawdi, Manpada, and in Waghbeel junctions, the construction work is about to get completed.
