More garbage processing units to come up in Pune
With the increasing population, there has been an increase in garbage from every area in Pune. So, to keep this in check, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is planning to increase the number of garbage processing units across the city.
With the existing mechanism, PMC is able to process 70% of the city’s garbage and is not able to take care of whole 1,300-1,400 metric tonne garbage that is generated every day.
As per the Environment Status Report (ESR) for 2011-12 which has been published recently, the civic body claims to achieve 100% processing which is false. Pune is witnessing 5% increase in garbage every year. But the processing units are not able to handle the garbage collected and only 70% get processed.
The reasons for not able to process whole of garbage are gaps in garbage collection, electricity problems, machinery breakdown, maintenance and other local issues.
According to PMC officials, they are planning to increase small garbage processing units across the city as Hanjer project is unable to take all load in the city.
Waste has been dumped at the landfill in Urli Devachi and Phursungi for nearly twenty years. But in June 2010, after twenty years of dumping waste at the site, civic body claimed to have completely stopped open dumping.
