Tumkur village won’t accept Bangalore garbage
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has marked 600 acres of land near Togarighatta village in Koratagere taluk of Tumkur district in order to dump garbage.
A private developer has proposed to build a garbage processing unit in Togarighatta for which both the State Pollution Control Board and BBMP have given the green signal. The tender has already been sent to the authority for approval.
Though the BBMP commissioner submitted an affidavit before court saying that there are no villages within two kilometres of the site, in reality, the site is surrounded by many villages and the main occupation of the people is agriculture. The Tumkur Zilla Panchayat has already decided to oppose the BBMP’s decision of making the site a landfill and even villagers are gearing up to protest.
A member from Zilla Panchayat said that it is not possible to allow dumping of Bangalore garbage as they themselves are finding it difficult to dump waste generated in Tumkur city and other towns in the district. The Tumkur Zilla Panchayat will soon send a letter to the state government to drop the plan and works that had been initiated.
However, a group of 150-strong band of members of World Mission Society Church of God-International We Love U Foundation educated residents on segregating and disposing waste and not littering vacant sites. The mission of this group is to make Bangalore city garbage free.
The group cleared the clogged drains of Fatima Layout and Govindapura in Nagwara from 9 am to 12.45 pm which was a part of the campaign. The Society has always volunteered in humanitarian efforts. This year they have taken up cleanliness.
Rajni Ruffus, programme-coordinator in Bangalore, said that they will be visiting the same areas where the drains had been cleaned by them in April to check if the drains are maintained by the residents or have deteriorated.
Rajni said that they cleaned the vacant sites and adviced the citizens not to litter empty plots, streets and drains. They also campaigned against dumping waste in plastic bags. The BBMP helped the group by providing their vehicles which is used to collect waste and disinfected the places cleaned. The residents also helped them.
The group has arranged a blood donation camp this year. They have also cleaned the trash thrown by visitors in the lush gardens of Lalbagh ahead of Republic day.
