Chennai metro rail to be operational soon
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is now focusing on the second corridor (Rs 14,600 crore), especially the stretch between Koyambedu and St. Thomas Mount which are two among eight elevated stations.
According to the chief construction general manager of CMRL , about 50 percent work of laying track at this stretch is completed. The remaining part of this stretch will be completed within three to four months after which signalling work will be carried out.
The official also added that side by side the pending civil work at this corridor will also be completed in six months. It includes construction of stations and the portion of the corridor over Kathipara junction. This stretch between Koyambedu and St. Thomas Mount will also have to accommodate a bridge over the Kathipara junction which will connect with the Metro corridor on two sides of the clover leaf-shaped flyover in Chennai city.
Till date, around 75 percent of civil work has been completed. If everything goes according to plan then the trial run may begin by July 2013. This will include speed trial followed by signal testing.
Sources say that the first quarter of 2014 is the planned deadline for the elevated stretch, but engineers expect a delay of three to five months. This is mainly because of the obstacles and issues that they might face at various stages such as land acquisition, lack of river sand etc.
