DMRC to lead Kochi metro
Kochi- The project work of Kochi metro will now be handed over to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). This elevated metro rail covers 25km distance from Alwaye to Petta with 22 stations.
On January 8, 2013, Federal Minister for Urban Development took this decision jointly with the Delhi government and the DMRC. A high level meeting was arranged with all senior concerned authorities to look into this matter.
This is Kerala’s dream project which was in state of uncertainty over the execution few month’s back. The work pressure was from the Kerala government and the Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL).
According to sources, this decision was formally announced by Kamal Nath, who is the central urban development minister. The terms of engagement for the DMRC in the Kochi Metro project was finalised by central urban development secretary, Sudhir Krishna. It was kept in mind that this project would not affect any metro works in Delhi taken up by DMRC. Chief Minister is also happy with these decisions as all the hindrances of the project have been cleared.
A memorandum of understanding will soon be signed in January 2013. DMRC will handle design, tendering and supervision with advisor E M Sreedharan. DMRC will also be accountable to invite tenders for Kochi Metro.
The Kochi metro technical sub-committee also suggested to increase the number of boggies from three to six in necessity. The federal government aims to complete this project within four years. But the principal advisor of both DMRC and Kochi Metro expects to complete it within three years.
