Chennai metro stations to get lifts, escalators, toilets
Chennai- The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will soon set up lifts and escalators in the completed metro stations in February 2013.
Work has been completed at CMBT and Koyembedu metro stations. Johnson Lifts Pvt. Ltd and China-based SJEC Corporation will provide 125 lifts and 300 escalators respectively. The cost of installing lifts and escalators for 32 metro stations in Chennai is worth Rs 197 crore.
The good news is that the lifts at Chennai metro stations will be disabled friendly. This is done according to “Guidelines and Space Standards for Barrier Free Built Environment for Disabled and Elderly Persons”, Central Public Works Department and Ministry of Urban Affairs and Employment, 1998. Lifts will also have audio announcement, braille facility to show floors and grip rails.
Another issue regarding construction of toilet at metro stations has raised. According to the officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), only important stations like Alandur, St. Thomas Mount and Central station will have more than one toilet.
Other stations will have only one toilet due to lack of space. Officials feel that this would suffice since this provision is only offered for emergency situation. Moreover officials don’t want people to stay for a long time at metro station.
