Property tax remains same in Hyderabad
Hyderabad – The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) budget for 2013-14 has been approved without any hike in property tax rates. The final approval will be given by the state government soon.
The corporation budget was presented by the Mayor of GHMC on February 18, 2013. The total outlay for the next financial year is Rs 3,800 crore which includes capital expenditure of Rs 2,271 crore and revenue expenditure of Rs 1,529 crore.
According to the Mayor, hike in property is not a solution to improve tax collection. It will only add burden on taxpayers. He added that it would be better to bring out people who have been evading tax payment. Few days back the civic body listed out top property tax defaulters in central zone. Hyderabad Asbestos Cement was on the top in this list. They had property tax arrears of worth Rs 3.03 crore. There are also many properties in Hyderabad which either not assessed or that are under-assessed. Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (MIM) also does not support increase in property tax.
Although there is no hike in property tax but it is expected that property tax collection may increase substantially to Rs 950 crore in the next financial year. Collection of property tax from the state and Central government buildings and properties will be done with proper assessment. Around Rs 750 crore tax will be collected by bringing out un-assessed properties, under assessed properties and property tax defaulters.
The budget presented the plans and priorities of GHMC for the coming year. It included many projects, programs, policies and schemes which are implemented to improve and upgrade civic amenities in the GHMC area. The two important programmes for 2012-13 financial year was Greater Hyderabad Development Programme and Slum-Free Hyderabad Project.
An amount of Rs 60 crore will be collected by way of D&O Trade License Fee by Public Health Department. An amount of worth Rs 797.75 crore will also be collected by Town Planning Department. The GHMC will spend Rs 246.42 crore for the construction of flyovers, development of junctions and widening of roads under Greater Hyderabad Development Plan.
