NMC stops water supply to construction sites
Nashik- As water scarcity issue is rising in many cities, the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has stopped builders from using potable water for the ongoing constructions by disconnecting water connections.
The Corporation said that the concerned builders have to arrange water from other sources like wells, borewells, etc. This move of the civic authority of stopping water supply to builders using potable water from the municipal network is a part of its water management programme.
Earlier, the Corporation had planned to deny approvals to new construction sites which do not have independent sources of water.
Hereafter, municipal water will not be allowed for ongoing construction works. So the builders will have to look for alternate options like wells and private or personal borewells. Permission for new tap connections has been stopped and the existing connections have been sealed, said an executive engineer from NMC’s water supply department.
Though it is difficult to find water in borewells and particularly when summer is nearing, the developers can dig up to 200 ft deep to find water, he added.
Despite knowing how difficult it is going to be to find water, the builder community has welcomed the NMC’s initiative to save water. And they hope that they find water on their own for the construction activities.
President of Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Association of India, Kiran Chavan, said that they can understand the concerns of the residents and the corporation as the water supply at present is insufficient. He said that the realtors will try to manage from borewells, tanks and other sites.
Many of the real estate developers focus on borewells for 100 percent water so that once the construction work is completed, they can hand it over to apartment societies. Luckily there is adequate groundwater in Nashik to get from borewells. So getting water from borewells should not be an issue to builders.
