Residents protest against road proposed through Waghjai hill
Residents of Sahakarnagar have been protesting against a road that has been proposed to be built through the Waghjai hill.
This road will link Sinhagad Road to the Dashabhuja Ganapati Road in Tulshibaugwale colony in Pune.
The proposal has been planned under the draft development plan (DP) and will give a better connectivity. It will connect areas near Sinhagad Road, Warje and Karve Road to the Pune Satara Road.
However, the residents are not fine with the same and have opposed stating the tunnel will will worsen the existing traffic congestion on the Golwalkar Guruji Road. It will also make the roads narrower which leads towards Satara from Pune, Also, the biodiversity of the Waghjai hill will be damaged.
Many societies, individuals and residents’ groups have objected regarding the same and if required, are going to lodge a case in the court. Also, a website called www.savesahakarnagar.in will soon be launched to strengthen the movement.
A town planning expert has recently organised a meeting with the residents and discussed that the draft DP has also proposed widening of the 50-ft Dashabhuja Ganapati Road to make in up to 70 feet. For this, many trees will be cut along with acquiring of 20 ft stretch from the housing societies and apartments in Pune city.
Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has not proposed the tunnel plan in the comprehensive plan and further questions were put forward by the expert regarding the traffic load and demand study before putting forward the proposal in the draft DP.
Many residents have also filed an application under the Right to Information Act to seek details of any studies conducted by the municipal corporation. It was informed that around 123 fully grown trees will be cut along the Dashabhuja Ganapati Road.
Also, there are chances of increase in respiratory diseases and air and noise pollution if trees would not exist impacting the environment and residents’ life.
Several drafts can be used by citizens to file objections once the website goes public by April 26.
