Action against Unauthorized buildings in Chennai
The committee, set up under the directions of the Madras high court, recommended stringent action against 200 buildings in the Chennai Metropolitan Area for construction violations. The action will involve sealing the properties until they demolish the illegal floors added to the structure.
Of the 200 buildings shortlisted for action, 48 have been under scrutiny for over four years. These were the first buildings identified by the urban authorities, including Chennai Corporation and Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), for violating development control rules on floor space index, set back, parking and fire safety.
Floor space index is the ratio of land area to the built-up space, while set back is the space around the building, with reference to road width, height of the building and plot depth.
Roughly, a quarter of these buildings are in T Nagar, the commercial hub of the city, and are located on Usman Road and Ranganathan Street. The action will involve sealing the properties until they demolish the illegal floors added to the structure.
The committee, set up under the directions of the Madras high court, comprises senior officials of various government bodies and experts in urban planning. “A fresh set of notices to those 48 buildings will be immediately sent and they will be given a month’s time for setting right the violations,” government sources said. This will be followed by notices being issued to another set of 42 buildings, which comprises the second group already identified by CMDA.
