Ahmedabad slums re-housing may take generations

No Comments Sub Category:Ahmedabad,Civic Issues,Municipality Posted On: Mar 06, 2013

slumsAccording to a research paper, it may take an entire generation to rid Ahmadabad of slums and re-house the 4.2 lakh households living in the slums. Factors like the existing policies and pace of work are also responsible for this.

The research paper had a team of seven members who authored the working paper. It stated that the city’s housing stock increased by merely 50,000 units per year within a 10-year period until 2001.

This housing growth is further divided among housing production at current slums followed by a mix o formal and illegal colonies and the JNNURM. The research paper includes CEPT university’s president and an official of SEWA Mahila Housing Trust.

The complete study indicates that the total public and the private production of the formal housing is really small. Even if all the new formal housing goes to the poor households along with the clear overestimate, it would still come take generations to rehouse the 422,000 households from the slums.

Also the median household incomes were calculated by the authors which showed an increase by 2.7 times from the year 2001 which still shows that formal housing still is affordable by a large part of population.

Further added, the slums are spread across areas which have barely increased by 2 percent in the past ten years whereas the slum population increased by 18 percent contributing to a densification of the existing slums.
