AMC Ahmedabad planning to Scale up Fines for Littering

Comments(2) Sub Category:Uncategorized Posted On: Aug 16, 2011

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) plans a 100% clearance of all garbage containers in the city. In fact, from next Wednesday, deputy municipal commissioners in individual zones will monitor garbage-dump clearance. The AMC will also strengthen its fleet with 40 garbage trucks fitted with lifters and compactors. Each vehicle can lift an average of 200 garbage containers in a day.

The AMC will target commercial roads in the walled city, SG Road, Drive-in Road, CG Road, Jodhpur Road and Vastrapur. Residential areas will be covered next.

“A worker will be assigned to each of the 750 garbage containers in the city,” the official said. The worker will stop people from throwing garbage outside containers. “Earlier, garbage used to be cleared early in the morning but residents disposed of garbage between 9 am and 11 am when commercial areas opened,” the official said. “The newly merged areas will receive the maximum stock of the 900-odd containers.”

Those who drop litter in the city will be fined heavily in the coming weeks – the AMC is planning to scale up fines. The fines are expected to go up from Rs 150 to Rs 5,000, depending on the extent of littering.

“There will be a substantial increase in fines for litterbugs,” said a senior AMC official. “If we were fining individuals Rs 50 for littering earlier, the new proposal envisages a penalty of Rs 100-150 as the first warning. “Repeat offenders will be fined Rs 500, the official said. “As for shops and establishments that do not heed our warning, it is for certain that fines will be raised to Rs 5,000 per offence,” he said.

I am a resident at Bunglow 17, Vasundhara Colony 17, Gulbai Tekro, Panchvati, Ahmedabad-6.

At the curved fence area, the residents of Bunglow No. 18, ‘Dipali’, residing family: Vasa surname, had been found dumping their trash, garden material and refuge. This matter was reported to Ashwinbhai (supervisor). Though AMC made efforts to pick-up the trash several times, the ‘educated’ people of Vasa family continued piling their trash at the gate site of bunglow No. 17. We have already placed the sign requesting not to place the trash. PLEASE TAKE immediate actions to fine this residents. PLease
confirm via email that no more trash is left at bunglow No. 17 area. Thank you.
